Weʼve raised £5,920 to Mells Village Cottage Fire Appeal
- Time left
- Funded on Saturday, 22nd April 2017
Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.
The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.
Late in the evening of Monday March 13th a single mother and her son realised that their electric fuse box was sparking alarmingly. Within minutes a fire had started in the roof of the 400 year old thatched cottage that their family had owned for several generations. The fire brigade were called and, despite the support of fire engines from all over Somerset, the fire took hold and burned fiercely through the night.
By morning the cottage, and almost all of its contents, had been destroyed.
There is no insurance for the cottage or its contents as the cost of insuring a thatched building was too much for a teaching assistant. The family are now living in a mobile home while they try to deal with this terrible tragedy.
Local people are spreading the word, and have asked where they can donate. Hence this Just Giving account.
The money raised is being paid to a bank account run by the Mells Community Benefit Shop who will pass it on to the family as soon as it is received.
Please give generously

The Appeal has just closed with a splendid £5,920 in the account. That is supplemented by over £1000 in direct donations from local charities and businesses taking us well over £7000. This will give Cathy and her family the funds to begin the painstaking work of making good and preparing for the restoration and also equipping their mobile home with household items lost in the blaze. Thank you all for your generous support. If anyone has building materials or equipment that could be loaned or donated please email Rob at email@example.com
