I'm Melanie, 33 years old and in Nov 2017 I was diagnosed with stage 4 incurable kidney cancer. I have 3 children aged 13, 11 and 9. My youngest has autism and 15q11.2 chromosome deletion. I was born in England but moved to Australia aged 5 then returned to England aged 16. I have never returned to Australia where most of my dad's side of the family live. We have never been overseas as a family and I'd love to take them for a holiday to see where I grew up and to meet my family.
My cancer story:
I was diagnosed with Grave's autoimmune hyperthyroid disease in 2012 after losing a baby at 21 weeks gestation. I was successfully treated with antithyroid meds. In 2016, I had a relapse and started antithyroid medication again. In Jan 2017, while still on medication, I started to experience similar symptoms which were put down to my thyroid. I also had a persistent cough. As the months went by with various visits to the GP, I gradually grew sicker to the point I could barely stand, was losing balance, had abdominal pain, wasn't eating, couldn't stay awake, and was losing weight with sickness and diarrhoea. In Nov 2017, the GP finally sent me to the hospital where they prescribed antibiotics. I returned a week later still experiencing pain so they performed an ultrasound finding a large mass on my left kidney. I returned the next day for a CT scan where I was diagnosed with advanced kidney cancer with a 10cm kidney mass and bilateral lung nodules. They think it had been growing for 2 years. I underwent a radical nephrectomy in Jan 2018.
I am a tricky case as I have an autoimmune disease which means I am ineligible for immunotherapy drugs and clinical trials so will soon be undergoing radioiodine treatment to hopefully cure the Grave's disease before I begin kidney cancer treatment
Unfortunately, kidney cancer that has spread is incurable and treatment only helps to prolong life.
I'm very thankful for any support and donations in creating lasting memories for my children.
