I am hoping to go to Madagascar this summer to study the impacts of disturbance on bird communities in the Mahamavo forest. The work that I am planning to do here will contribute towards future research projects into bird diversity in the area. The objectives of my work here are to observe how the structure and the biodiversity of this forest change over time. It will also allow for the documentation of how effective this community managed area is in terms of biodiversity conservation as well as the identification of other areas where forest replanting programmes could be started in order to extend the forest coverage. This is really important as Madagascar was once covered in with 7.6 million hectares of lush forest in the 1950s. Now an estimated 80% of this has gone. It is vital that more trees are planted in Madagascar for the sake of it’s wildlife, of which about 90% is found nowhere else on the planet.
