Story
On the 10th of June 2017 I have decided to go for a bit of a walk with 4 of my closest friends. To make things a bit more challenging, we have decided to walk up (and back down) the highest peaks in Scotland, England, and Wales.
Over (roughly) 24hours, we will climb Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike, and finally Mount Snowden.
If we mange this (and are still talking to each other at the end), it will prove that middle aged men (and a women) are over the (three) hill(s).
To keep me motivated during the hours of walking, get me through the hours of sleep deprivation, and worst of all - through the hours of my friend Mark's inane jokes - I have decided to try to raise some money for a cause which I really believe in.
Nansambo Primary is a school in Malawi that my friends Jane, John, & Sue Tobin have supported for many years. They provide funding and resources which enable the school to educate nearly 1300 children. Malawi is the poorest nation in the world, and Nansambo school was in a very poor state when the Tobin's first found it. With their support, the school now has some of the basic amenities - i.e. a borehole to provide fresh water, buildings which have been repaired to house the classes (where over 160 children per class sit on the floor for lessons), and basic stationery such as exercise books and pencils.
Only Primary education to age 14 is compulsory in Malawi, and little over a third of children progress to Secondary education (which is not state funded). A Secondary education in Malawi provides huge opportunities for the child to progress into jobs that will not only provide themselves with a brighter future, but often their extended families as well.
It seems hard to believe that only £550 is enough to provide 4 years of secondary education for 1 child, but this would cover the tuition fees, uniform, shoes, and stationery they would need, and is an amount that is well out of the reach of most parents in Malawi.
Thanks for your support

7 years agoI'm pleased to say that we made it. We didn't make it in 24hours, but making it all was hard enough! Thank you for all your support, your sponsorship will make a huge difference to the lives of the two children who will now be able to have the secondary education that would otherwise have been unobtainable.
