I’m a very lucky girl! I've been selected to take part in the Women's Heritage Trek from 10th to 14th February in the UAE. I'll be trekking alongside 49 other expat and Emirati women over a distance of 140km, between Al Ain and Abu Dhabi. Each day, I'll start walking at 5am and will stumble into the night camp at 5pm. The trek is across sand and over dunes, so no easy task! I'll be sleeping in Bedouin tents with very basic facilities - there'll be no showers!
My lovely brother-in-law, John, has not been so lucky! He was diagnosed in November 2015 with a rare and advanced-stage cancer that he is working hard to beat with some very specialist treatment, not accessible via the NHS.
Alongside the traditional chemotherapy, John is fighting the cancer with a range of complementary therapies. This regime includes 100+ supplements taken throughout the day. He is also travelling to a clinic in Germany to receive hyperthermia treatment - something that offers him and his family great hope but is not available in the UK.
Until his diagnosis a year ago, John was your average 42-year-old, leading a busy life and enjoying spending time with his wife and daughters. He has always led a healthy lifestyle - never smoked, exercised regularly and eats well. John’s cancer diagnosis was a shock to us all and proved in the most conclusive way that cancer is brutally indiscriminate.
The money I raise will help to fund these treatments and supplements which are designed to reduce the cancer growth and spread, whilst at the same time strengthening the immune system so that John’s good cells are best equipped to fight the cancer. The supplements alone come at a huge cost (£2,000 per month), and a stay in Germany for treatment is £15,000. He is also considering a breakthrough immunotherapy drug that is only available privately and at a cost of approximately £8,000 every 3 weeks. So I am looking to help in any way I can to relieve this burden from John and his family.
