Story
This project is to restore the bells at Milton Regis church (Kent) and augment to eight by adding two new bells. The Tower is the largest in Kent and third largest in England in girth. The Tower was built between 1310 and 1330. There are 6 bells, four dated 1681 and one 1890 and one donated in 1934 by J. Dixon Esq. in memory of four local Milton Regis bell ringers who lost their lives in the Great War.
The existing six bells at Milton Regis are in need of a complete restoration as the fitting and bearings are extremely worn and this is now making the bells very difficult to ring.
The scheme is to restore the six bells and also augment with two new bells to make a full octave of eight bells. Not only would this sound a lot better but would broaden the variety of what could be rung on the bells. This would also attract more interest from the ringing society. Because of Milton's location (close to the M2/A2/A249 etc), it would be an ideal tower to use as a 'ringing centre' on occasions to train ringers from around the county and to strengthen eight bell ringing in general. It would also increase visitors to the church and the church would be open more often. After restoration, the bells would also be suitable to teach bell ringing to those already interested in our own parish. With the restoration of the existing bells we will be able to extend the age range by teaching bell ringing to interested parties from the age of twelve upwards and elderly ringers who are currently finding the ringing of the bells a struggle will be able to continue for some time to come. The addition of two extra bells would mean more people could be involved and would broaden the number of changes that could be rung from 720 to 40,320 which would also mean that numerous more methods and training exercises could be rung on the bells.
