Story
I am a mindfulness teacher who teaches different groups eight week mindfulness courses. I recently taught the MBLC course to a group of asylum seeking and refugee women. The main challenge to these learners was accessing the mindfulness practices for their home practice. Many didn't have emails or access to the internet so the usual route of downloading tracks from my website or a drop box file was not possible. None had a CD player so giving a CD out (which is my other option) was also not possible. If I could raise funds for a class set of MP3 players to give to the women in the next course I hope to teach in the new year with pre-loaded practices it would really support the women on the course and their mindfulness practice.
This cohort of women come from various war-torn parts of the world and have had a difficult life and some face uncertainty around their refugee status now they are in the UK. While mindfulness cannot 'fix' any of these issues it can offer a different perspective to those who engage with it. In the last course I taught participants reported that the course encouraged them to re-engage with basic things like going for a walk in the park, having a shower or doing some morning stretches. For many this was a positive nudge towards enhanced well-being but all reported having no access to the practices was the biggest challenge on the course.
