    Story

Hello everyone, Welcome to my page!

Sri Lanka’s education system is impressive for a developing country of its size. Public education is available from the age of 6-18. However, many government schools, particularly in rural areas, receive minimal government funding and are expected to serve large communities! The facilities at the schools are very basic, the classrooms are small and extremely cramped with average class sizes of around 40 to 60 children.

The ability to speak English is growing in importance in Sri Lanka. The main source of income is from tourism. This occupation requires the ability to speak English – the world’s global language. But, the level of English teaching in government schools is limited. Class sizes are large and the teachers’ English speaking skills are by no means perfect. It is only the middle and upper class children who can afford private English lessons. The children from most low-income families speak little or no English. Our aim is to give the poorer children of Ambalangoda the same opportunities as their more wealthy peers so they too have the chance to develop their ability to speak English.

The Tsunami Village Project is an after-school education programme initiated by Plan My Gap Year and is the main teaching project that volunteers take part in. They work in a number of Tsunami villages, which are a community of houses that were donated by the government and international charities to accommodate families who lost their homes after the Tsunami. The children attend local government schools during the mornings. Our aim is to further their English language knowledge by giving them free after-school English lessons. The volunteers give the children a global perspective of different cultures.

I need your help! I would like to raise the money to take 4 weeks out of my 2019 summer to visit Sri Lanka and teach English to make a difference to these communities.

Please donate. Every little helps. :)
