Dear friends,

The Surrey Half Marathon, on the 11th March 2018, is fast approaching! This year I have teamed up with my son Jonathan (6yrs), my niece Amani (7yrs) and my nephew Jesse (9yrs) to raise funds for Turning Point Trust Kenya.

I will be running the 5km race, and the three children will do the 2km kids’ races. We are all looking forward to setting new personal best times and above that to jointly raising £500 for Turning Point Trust Kenya.

Turning Point Trust is a charity based in Kibera, one of the biggest slums in Kenya. Turning Point Trust provides access to high quality education through the Kianda Children’s Centre, Fountains of Hope School, and also provides financial and practical support to primary school graduates as they attend local secondary schools.

We are raising money for one specific initiative of the charity, their community library. The library offers school children access to learning resources and provides a venue to study and revise. Libraries are not common in Kenya, growing up I went to my local library twice before it shut down. I still have great memories of those two visits.

What's so special about this community library is that it offers the children a safe place to do their homework and revise for exams, this includes practicalities such as good lighting (most children in Kibera would use candles or lanterns in their homes for lighting), copies of local syllabus text books, and adult supervisors who can act as learning mentors. It’s a great resource for the children and the community.
