Story
DYW lead and Modern Studies teacher Neil Hyslop is a current member of staff at Stranraer Academy. Ellen Watt is a 6th year pupil at the same school, a member of the school's charities committee and has recently been appointed to the position of Depute Head Girl. Katie McMillan is also in 6th year at the Academy, a member of the charities committee and a successful athlete. Chloe Laverie is in the same register group as the other two girls and has been involved in a number of initiatives across the school in addition to being a top class netball player. Mr Hyslop has been all three girls' register and Modern Studies teacher for the past 5 years. After some friendly banter in registration recently they decided to challenge each other to run the Bank of Scotland Great Scottish Run (10k) on the 1st of October this year.
Mr Hyslop hasn't run a 10k for a number of years, is getting on in years and by his own admission has let himself go a little bit recently. Ellen has recently taken up Rugby and is keen to further improve her fitness, Katie enjoys running and was keen to get involved. Chloe was kind enough to step in when it became apparent that Katie may require to run a different race due to other commitments. So all parties have their own personal reasons for needing/wanting to get a bit fitter and plan to train for the event over the summer holidays.
All of the money raised will go to the family of Stranraer Academy's network administrator Andrew Glasgow who passed away on the 28th of August. He battled bravely after being diagnosed with Bowel cancer in December 2016. Andrew was a colleague and friend of Mr Hyslop and until recently they played football together every Friday night after school. In addition to this Mr Hyslop was in Andrew's wife Fiona's primary school class at Rephad and they also went to secondary school together at Stranraer Academy. All three girls have their own reasons for wanting to help the Glasgow family. Andrew's son Harry is currently in 6th year at Stranraer Academy alongside Ellen and Chloe. Katie is a keen curler and often plays against or alongside Harry at the North West Castle.
Hopefully the money raised can help the Glasgow family during this difficult time. Donations will go directly to the family's account and will be very much appreciated.

7 years agoWell the big day is nearly here for all 4 runners. T-shirts in memory of Andy have been ordered and should be arriving in the next day or two. Katie runs the Scottish 10k just outside Edinburgh this Sunday and will set the standard for the other 3 runners who will join the starters at the Bank of Scotland Great North Run in Glasgow on Sunday the 1st of October. All 4 of us have been amazed by the generosity and support which we have received throughout the journey and are extremely proud to be running on behalf of the Glasgow family.
