Story
The Cause:
Therapies Unite works with children and adults with physical and or mental disabilities in Mexico. Limited resources, services and equipment for people with disabilities as well as a lack of knowledge in regards to treatment and management results in poor physical and mental health outcomes, limits life expectancy and has a negative impact on quality of life.
It is estimated there are 9.17 million people living with a disability in Mexico, 7.5% of the population. Sadly, only 15% of people with a disability are receiving secondary education, 47.2% are employed and 45% and live in poverty. Moreover, awareness of disability rights is low among both people with and without disabilities.
Therapies Unite has worked in Mexico for the past six years and runs six programs including a hydrotherapy program, postural management clinic, a volunteer program, specialist training/courses and community disabled sports group. All focus on improving the physical and/or mental health and general well-being of individuals with disabilities. Therapies Unite works with family members, health care professionals and carers working within the field of disabilities to educate, empower and improve existing local services. We also focus on the wider communities, promoting and celebrating the achievements of individuals with disabilities, providing opportunities for work and recreational activities and improving integration into society. Therapies Unite strives to achieve positive changes that are long lasting and sustainable by the local community.
Currently Therapies Unite is run by a very small team with limited resources and time. We want this to change so we can have even more of an impact. within the disabled community.
The Challenge:
A team of keen and brave volunteers is going to be taking on Tough Mudder Midlands in May (20/05/2018). Some have already completed similar courses for Therapies Unite, whilst others are completely new to the team and to Tough Mudder.
The course will be between 10 and 11 miles, with around 20-25 obstacles and LOTS OF MUD!
Show your support for the team and for Therapies Unite by donating what you can, and by spreading the word of the challenge!

6 years agoWell, we're now into May, which means that we now have less than 3 weeks until we hit the mud! For some of us this will be their first outing at Tough Mudder, whilst for others it's getting back into it. What we share though is a drive to support a wonderful charity. Therapies Unite does incredible work supporting adults and children with physical disabilities throughout Mexico and especially in Puerto Vallarta. They also offer placements for Physiotherapy students through their links to Keele University. Check out their work for yourselves!

Many of the team are personally invested in the work of Therapies Unite, having promoted and fundraised for them on a number of occasions. Aleks in particular is a key supporter through personal connections and his work as a physiotherapist, getting others on board whilst at uni.
