Since moving to Muscat, Oman in August of 2016, my wife and I have taken in 2 stray cats and done all that we can to help the countless stray animals that wander the streets. The number of strays is continuing to rise, in addition to the fact that many animals are now being left to fend for themselves by owners who move on and simply leave them behind. Our local vet is playing their part by running their Trap, Neuter, Release programme (TNR) which involves volunteers capturing the strays, taking them in for neutering before releasing them again. There are obviously many costs involved, for both the vets and the volunteers, but in doing so they are minimising the risk of more helpless animals being subjected to a difficult life on the streets. We witnessed the terrible state of some of Muscat’s strays just yesterday when we picked up a stray cat who had been injured and left to starve. We had no option but to have him put to sleep. There was just nothing that could be done for him. It was a heartbreaking scenario but one that has led me to take action and to attempt to do more to help these defenceless animals.
