Story
In April 2016, after a series of tests at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, it was suggested that my little cousin, Lucas, may have Muscular Dystrophy. Ten weeks later, on the 8th of July, it was confirmed that he had the most common, but also the most serious form, Duchenne.
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a genetic, fatal, life-limiting disorder affecting 1 in 3500 live male births (around 2500 people have DMD in the UK at any one time). It results in a progressive loss of strength and is caused by a mutation in the gene that encodes dystrophin. Because dystrophin is absent, the muscle cells are easily damaged and the progressive muscle weakness then leads to serious medical problems, particularly issues relating to the heart and lungs. Although there are medical treatments that may slow its progressions, there is currently no cure for Duchenne.
In October 2017, a small group of us will be taking part in the Great South Run in order to raise money for equipment for Lucas, to help make things that bit easier for him, and to also help raise awareness of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and by extension it's registered charity, Action Duchenne.
