Story
Our glorious little school is the last school in Upper Ribblesdale..and it's under serious threat of closure.
Its loss would rip the heart from our community and would spell the end of young family life being centered in Horton.
Sitting at the base of Phen-y-Gent it has educated uper Ribblesdale children and ensured our communities sustainability for over 300 years.
Small primary school education is widely recognised as the best start a child can have and our children thrive in an environment encompassing both indoor and outdoor learning.
We have, with help from Craven District Council and the Yorkshire Dales National Park, devised an exciting plan that uses our school to introduce an outdoor learning experience unlike any other offered in the Dales. An opportunity not just for our children but for others to learn aspects of the curriculum in a unique and diverse environment.
This will not only be a Forest school ..it will be more.
We have links and support from local quarries and forestry sites, the unique heritage and history surrounding the famous Settle-Carlisle railway and Ribblehead viaduct, caves, gorges, mountain tops, overnight camping opportunities, orienteering, weekend and summer activities..the list goes on.
Horton welcomes thousands of visitors every year as they start on our famous three peak walks, but now our community needs your help to ensure it's survival and success.
If you could donate a little to help us develop this project it would help stop the enforced closure North Yorkshire County Council is currently proposing.
Horton school is unique in its location, history and the opportunities it offers. To lose it would not only devastate our community, it would be a disastrous loss for educational provision throughout Yorkshire and beyond.
A donation not only helps this project succeed it also illustrates support in helping a small school survive
With many thanks and best wishes

7 years agoOh my goodness! In just 3 days we have raised 30% of our target! I can't thank you enough for your support, generosity and goodwill messages. As an aside the campaign group has decided that if the very worst occurs, and NYCC do achieve their goal of shutting us down this money will be donated to charity. The charity we have chosen is the National Association of Small Schools, whose help and support has been invaluable so far and will continue to be throughout the fight and beyond. But they won't get it.. because we're going to win!! 💪💪💪
