Having just been to Zimbabwe, we were horrified to learn that Rabies was becoming more prevalent in the canine population, by the day. While we we there in October, a dog was picked up in Harare itself and found to be Rabid. There is a determined effort being made by VAWZ (Veterinarians for Animal Welfare Zimbabwe) to set up clinics in the rural areas (latest one being at Victoria Falls) where dogs can be brought for Rabies vaccinations and also for sterilization. (Spaying and Neutering) This exercise costs money and because of the dire economic position in Zimbabwe, most dog owners cannot pay for these basic necessities for their animals. We have now returned to the UK, where we will try to raise funds, to help Zimbabwe's animals and people become safe again from Rabies.
