    Story

WHO? Me and my 60 year old dad.

My name is Nick. I am a 32 year old dad of 2. I am a college lecturer and a youth worker by trade. I am a keen footballer and have done 2 half marathons in the past. The furthest I have ever run is 13 miles ( a half marathon).

My dad is an exercise enthusiast/ crazy old man. He ran the very first London Marathon in 1981. He is now 60. Last year he cycled 1000 miles across the UK. In his 50s he completed a half iron man and then decided to do the full iron man. He has done a handful of marathons and ultra marathons. He is super fit. Especially for a 60 year old.

I will be running the Bath half marathon for the Genesis Trust in Bath. The Genesis Trust are a charity that brings the community together to offer immediate practical help to people who are hungry, homeless and vulnerable and provide long-term opportunities for them to rebuild their lives. They work individually with people on their journey from despair to hope, from crisis to independence. You can read more about them at www.genesistrust.org.uk

*As the Genesis Trust didn't have any more London Marathon places I will be running the London Marathon for Asthma UK.

Asthma UK work to stop asthma attacks and, ultimately, cure asthma by funding world leading research and scientists, campaigning for change and supporting people with asthma to reduce their risk of a potentially life threatening asthma attack. It's amazing to be supporting Asthma UK because breathing is such a natural thing for most that it is easy to take for granted. I've worked with young people for a while and the amount of times I've had young people lose or misplace their inhalers is crazy. It would be amazing to see people free from asthma attacks. So this is my way of helping. For more information of what they do check out- https://www.asthma.org.uk/

WHAT? The plan is to run the Bath Half and London Marathon with my dad to raise money for charity. My financial target is to raise a minimum of £2500. *The split will be £500 to Genesis Trust and £2000 to Asthma UK. Any money that exceeds my target will be split 50/50.

    WHERE? Bath and London

    WHEN? Bath Half- 15th March 2020 / London Marathon 26th April 2020

WHY? My dad ran the very first London Marathon in 1981. It's the London marathon's 40th anniversary this year and my dad and I decided to try and do it together. This will be my first marathon and may be his last (hopefully not), so it would be amazing to do it together. The furthest I have ever run is a half marathon and I am intrigued to see what I am capable of. I love a physical challenge and I need events as motivation and something to aim for. I've always thought about doing the London marathon and I grew up thinking it was just part of normal life when I watched my dad but I'm now 32 (How did that happen?!) and have not done one. It's only going to get harder. So now is the time.

Also something I am passionate about is serving and helping other people- whether that is physically, practically, verbally or emotionally. I love feeling helpful or valuable to someone else which is why I want to run to raise money for charity. I get satisfaction out of doing something on behalf of someone else, like an advocate. so using my physical ability to put myself through pain and run around a course weirdly feels enjoyable. And what will make it even more worthwhile is if I reach my financial target as that really would help others- it would truly suck to work so hard and physically exert myself and not get to financially help anyone else. Also if you read Romans 12:1-21 in the bible that will sum up all the above.

HOW? Serious amounts of training, commitment, vlogs, other surprise events.
