Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.
The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.
I am sure most of you are aware that Greece is at the forefront of a crisis quickly spiralling out of control. Refugees and asylum seekers make risky and dangerous journeys from North African and Middle Eastern countries, in search for security and a better life away from war, persecution and deprivation. Many of these people use Greece as a passthrough and a means to reach better off EU countries, but very often become stranded due to lack of legal documentation primarily as a result of the EU-Turkey deal. This in turn puts huge strains on the resources and facilities available, with hundreds of people arriving in Greece on a daily basis.
As you can imagine, this crisis has catalysed much division and polarisation within the EU community, with debates arising over who is truly responsible. Many European countries have closed their borders, leaving huge burdens on countries at the eye of the storm, such as Greece. What a lot of countries fail to appreciate is that closing borders and a cutting off access doesn't solve the problem, as people will find ways and means to cross borders and travel illegally, creating further issues down the line.
Many sectors of the Greek government lack the experience and specialisation to tackle this crisis head on; they require assistance from the EU and the wider international community. This has resulted in many NGOs (non-governmental organisations) popping up all over Greece, as a lot of them have more experience and resources available to them.
One of these NGOs based in Athens goes by the name 'ANKAA Project', who are a small startup organisation 'working with people to create personally tailored programmes supported by a collaborative network and self-led workspaces to target skill development, vocational training, language, education and employment opportunities'. In short, they provide the bare necessities for people seeking a better life away from war zones and persecution.
I am currently in Athens volunteering for ANKAA for month, and am pleading for any sort of donations however big or small. The money will go directly towards helping to fund the new ANKAA Project and developing their new centre. If you know me, you know that I am passionate about international aid and development, and think it is one of the most important topics of our generation. The way in which we progress forward as a human race in the forthcoming years is of paramount importance for the perseverance of our future, leaving no one behind.
To whoever has read this far thank-you! I very much appreciate your support and look forward to telling you all about what I have been doing on my return home.
