Story
Offset your carbon footprint and help to establish wildlife corridors across the UK by funding our local tree planting project!
With the planting season upon us again, we're back planting trees with our dedicated volunteers across Sussex and Hampshire! With the incredible help of our supporters so far, we managed to plant over 7,000 trees between November 2019 - March 2020, and this year, with your help, we want to plant even more!
Every £1 you donate = 1 tree planted
One tree can sequester 1 tonne (1000kg) of carbon dioxide by the time it reaches 40 years old. To put this in perspective, the average person in the UK emits 10 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. Calculate your own carbon footprint here via the WWF Footprint Calculator.
Why does this matter?
As each tree grows it will absorb a lot of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere (up to 48 pounds a year, and up to 1 tonne by the time it reaches 40 years old). Trees build themselves from carbon through photosynthesis, which is stored inside of the tree itself and below the ground over time, giving us a net reduction of atmospheric carbon dioxide. Planting trees is therefore a vital strategy to mitigate climate change and to help us live in symbiosis with nature, while providing much needed habitat for threatened UK species.
Increasing tree planting also encourages sustainable land-use, stabilising and renutrifying soil, increasing resilience to flooding, and helping to restore local biodiversity.
The benefits of trees are so much more than simply off-setting carbon. They provide habitat for birds, insects and countless other species of animals. They moderate our air temperature, help reduce soil erosion, stabilise banks, reduce flooding and clean the very air we breathe! Trees and green spaces are also vital for our mental wellbeing - making our human habitat that much more beautiful and sustainable.
Watch the video below with Greta Thunberg and George Monbiot talking about the importance of planting these "magic machines" as a natural climate solution.
What can you do?
Please donate for trees (every little helps!), share and tell your friends and family about this initiative - all funds raised will be used to plant trees, and if you'd like to come along to see the trees you've helped fund into the ground, visit our website to join our mailing list: www.wilding.earth
Volunteers will learn how best to plant tree whips and the myriad benefits of trees, becoming champions and stakeholders for the protection of their local environment (but you'll need to bring a spade and your own lunch!).
What are we fundraising for?
We are fundraising for the trees themselves (whips, or baby trees, around 1-2 years old), which we supply free of charge to farmers and landowners to incentivise tree planting in order to promote habitat creation and increasing biodiversity in our local environment (alongside all the macro impacts of carbon capture for climate change mitigation!). We then plant the trees ourselves alongside our community volunteers.
The tree whips are a mix of native species grown from seed in nurseries in the UK, and include Hawthorn, Hazel, Silver Birch, Rowan, English Oak, Blackthorn, Hornbeam, Spindle, Wayfaring-tree, Wild Cherry and Crabapple.
What are the costs?
Each tree whip costs approximately £1 - every £1 you spend = 1 more tree planted.
Thank you for your support - together we can establish wildlife corridors across the UK!
