    Weʼve raised £170 to help me attend the Our Ocean Youth Summit in Malta to showcase the voluntary work that my NGO, SYAH, has done for youth in the Blue Economy

    Story

    Growing up in Seychelles, I have observed the difficulties incurred by the government in facilitating locals with sufficient skills to support the country’s growth. Human resource constraints have had several effects including delayed development of infrastructure, ineffective policy-making and large financial expenses when employing expatriates. This situation persists even within the Blue economy sector with examples of companies where 60% of the workforce are foreign nationals due to a lack of local skilled labour.

    Last year, a colleague and I pioneered a Blue Economy (BE) Internship Programme for youth aged 15-29. We collaborated with 14 organizations working in the BE sector to host 19 interns over a two-week work placement. The internship was followed by an educational visit to 6 BE institutions in Mauritius. The project managed to encompass 3 of the Sustainable Development Goals; SDG 14,8 and 5. It allowed youth to explore the variety of Blue Economy careers available, gain work experience and build relationships with employers. Upon completion of the programme, the participants pledged a 12 month commitment as Youth Ocean Champions organizing activities and creating school eco-clubs to raise awareness about the Blue Economy and its importance.

    Through the Blue Economy Internship Programme, we are contributing towards shaping public mindset to the myriad of career opportunities and inter disciplinary skills required within the Blue Economy. However, we still need to tackle the challenge of attracting youth towards pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) related fields within the BE sector. Having delivered career talks and videos to encourage youth, especially girls, into STEM fields, I realized that at times it is merely the guidance and words of encouragement that may be lacking, causing students to shy away from STEM fields.

    Hence, I would like to create a platform for individuals to learn, share, promote and exchange STEM information. Through this platform, I would like STEM professionals to organize dialogues, contribute STEM expertise to the government on national development plans, participate in charity projects, perform outreach sessions and talks etc…. Through these activities, they will gain exposure and create a momentum that inspires youth into STEM careers. In combination with the Blue Economy programme, I believe it will implicitly help towards increasing the number of people pursing STEM careers within the Blue Economy as well.

    Attending the summit, is important to me for two main reasons;

    1. I would like to share our project with other like-minded youth and provide them with the toolkit we created on how to replicate the project. Hopefully I will be able to inspire and encourage them to replicate similar projects in their respective communities.

    2. Through networking and listening to youth from across the globe, I hope to understand best-practice and learn how to best tackle attracting youth into STEM careers
