    Story

On 27th May our son George was born. We were full term and just waiting for labour only to be told that George's heart had stopped beating. Our world stopped still and hasn't moved since. Everything we had been waiting for had just been taken from us. We never thought we would be leaving hospital with empty arms instead of our baby.

We delivered him naturally and had all the experiences with him we would have if his heart was still beating. We cuddled him, we watched films with him, we read to him and we stayed with him sleeping by our side in his cuddle cot. To some this may sound strange, but to us it was essential and completely life changing. These were the best days of our lives, and yet the only days we will ever have with our first child, Mark's absolute double, the most perfect little boy. We were finally parents but not how we ever thought we would be.

The Snowdrop suite we stayed in was away from the rest of the maternity ward, it had a double bed for both of us to stay in, a TV to try and give you even a minute's break from what is going on around you, Tea and Coffee to keep you going as your appetite is non existent, books to read to your baby, and a memory box. This contained kits to make hand and footprints, a teddy for George to keep and one for us, a blanket to wrap him up in, a candle to light every night when you get home, and tonnes of advice for newly bereaved parents. We have been given books to read about babyloss and incredible help from the midwives. We had no idea what we were doing at the time and to have all of this provided is invaluable.

Not every hospital has a bereavement suite, some women have to give birth surrounded by the sounds of crying babies when theirs never will. Not every hospital provides memory boxes, so some parents may never feel how big their babies feet or hands were again, or see the colour of their hair. Not every hospital has enough cuddle cots which allow parents to be able to spend time with their babies before they have to leave them forever.

George was perfectly healthy, and so was I. We have no explanation as to why we don't have him here with us now. Which is the same for many many other parents. Charities like SANDS and Tommy's are doing vital research to try and stop these unexplained deaths from happening. And 4Louis provide the amazing Memory Boxes.

Mark and I would like to do something to help other parents that unfortunately will go through this to get the best memories of their child. We want to provide as many memory boxes for the hospital we can, and any help with any equipment they may need. Cuddle cots alone cost £1500.

And we would like to give donations to some of the charities that are doing such amazing work trying to prevent and gain more understanding of baby loss and raise awareness in general. At least 8 babies are stillborn in the UK every day, each of those babies lost is also a loss of a toddler, a child, a teenager, a whole family's future.

We would appreciate any donations in memory of our angel George. Thankyou x

And a load of candles for parents to take home to light every night in memory of their angel. I hope those babies see and feel the candles lit just for them. And finally we have bought a bereavement training course for the midwives to be trained in stillbirth and neonatal deaths, which surprisingly, they are not already. Means so much doing these little things in George’s name, appreciate all the support x

Books for children, siblings of babies that can’t stay with us to help them understand why their parents are coming home from hospital without their little brother or sister. Some for parents and lots specifically for fathers/partners, We have found that dads/partners often get forgotten about. As a mum I have had lots of people offering me support, but Mark has barely had any. These books will hopefully at least make someone feel less alone and help them to see that what they are feeling is normal.

The latest donations to the hospital bereavement suite.. Hundreds of baby clothes & hats, ranging from 2lbs upwards for all those that are unprepared when their babies enter the world. Every baby deserves to be dressed in something beautiful when they are born. And every parent deserves to be able to dress their child, even if it is for the only time.
