We live in the 21st century where going to school is free and educational resources and opportunities are limitless, but for many, like children in Afghanistan, it is a privilege to have pen and paper. Let alone attend school.

The UN’s Children’s Agency and UNICEF state at least 3.7 million children never get to go school due to war and poverty.

Many children in Afghanistan never seen inside a classroom and those who do attend school have very limited resources, for example, they study in worn-out tents in heat and cold.

Instead many children, as young as five, are forced to work to support their families. This creates a continuous cycle, where they are limited to labour work and so the poor remain poor.

The culture is harsher for women and girls. Child marriage is very common because a dowry is paid to the girl’s family by the groom. Simply, the girl is sold due to poverty. UNICEF states that 1 in 3 young girls will be married before the age of 18.
