Story
I am taking to the skies and partaking in a charity skydive on 25th August 2018 to help raise much needed funds for the Air Ambulance NI in conjunction with the South West Down Ulster Farmers' Union.
The Ulster Farmers' Union aim to raise a total of £100,000 for Air Ambulance NI as their chosen charity in 2018 because of the valuable service it provides farmers and rural communities. Having an air ambulance means that emergency medical services can get to the countryside quickly, improving the chances of someone injured and ultimately saving lives.
The EC135 helicopter can get anywhere in the province in approximately twenty-five to thirty minutes and the rapid response is vital in an emergency situation. If a patient reaches hospital within the Golden Hour (60 minutes after their injury) their chances of survival are dramatically increased.
On 22 July 2017 during a period of final preparation and familiarisation, the Air Ambulance NI crew were tasked with attending to and transporting to hospital the eleven-year-old victim of an agricultural accident. This was the first ever live deployment of the new service and thankfully the patient is on their way to recovery.
What is not widely known is that AANI is a charity. Each day costs in the region of £5,500 and £2m is needed each year to keep the air ambulance service operational. They rely entirely on support from the public and local businesses, including Gifts in Wills.
