    Story

In September, Hurricane Maria streaked across Puerto Rico, a US territory, causing widespread devastation and havoc. Infrastructure such as water and electrical mains, as well as the road network, was severely damaged. In addition to the tragic loss of life, the hurricane also destroyed homes and communities, displacing individuals and families.

Two months after the hurricane, the situation remains dire. The federal response from the US government has been extremely lacking, hindering rebuilding efforts, and, more importantly, the delivery of resources to the areas most affected by the hurricane. Many on the island are still without clean drinking water or electricity, and rely on canned and dried goods for sustenance. Persisting debris and contaminated water sources are leading to a public health crisis. It is difficult to believe that a territory of one of the richest nations in the world is in such poor shape so long after the hurricane has passed.

In time for Movember, the Passmore lab is growing moustaches and raising funds for the ongoing local efforts to rebuild and rehabilitate Puerto Rico. We believe that these efforts are most effective on a grassroots level, such that donations go directly to local organisers. By making this fundraising initiative a lab-wide effort, we hope to spread awareness regarding the current situation in Puerto Rico, despite the aftereffects of the hurricane falling off the media cycle. With the help of Juan, Heidy, and their family, we have identified three local funds which will go a long way towards helping rebuild the local community. Juan and Heidy are personally familiar with the organisers, and so we can ensure that your donations are put to good use.

    1. La Corilla - Cocina Comunitaria Mariana Fund: La Corilla is a close-knit group of women seeking to raise short-term and long-term funds following Hurricane Maria. Their emergency fund will go towards rebuilding the community kitchen in Barrio Mariana II in Humacao, which cook and feed people daily as well as providing free workshops for locals. The money will also be used for materials to rebuild the village.

    2. Yo Soy Sobreviviente - Hurricane Maria Kids' Fund: These adopting parents of local children are raising funds for local family shelters and foster homes which have been affected by the hurricane. Your donations will fund the purchase of food, water, and fuel, which will be personally delivered to the shelters in need.

    3. P.E.C.E.S. - Hurricane Maria Relief: P.E.C.E.S. is a charity organisation with programmes in education, entrepreneurship, and prevention services for the at-risk populace, with a particular focus on young people. Your contributions will go towards buying fuel, food, and construction materials. The donations will also be used to hire local contractors for rebuilding efforts and bringing groceries directly to citizens.

All donations will be pooled and will be split equally to the three funds above, and how the funds are used can be followed via their websites. We appreciate any contributions, no matter the amount, and hope that you can help our efforts in spreading awareness regarding the situation in Puerto Rico. Thank you for your support.
