Story
On the 8th of August 2018, The Royal British Legion, in the biggest membership event in it's history, is recreating it's 1928 pilgrimage to World War One battlefields. A decade after the end of WW1, veterans and war widows visited the battlefields of the Somme and Ypres before marching to the Menin Gate in Ypres on 8 August 1928.
Exactly 90 years later, thousands of Legion members will recreate The 1928 Great Pilgrimage to visit the same battlefields and then, on 8th August 2018, carry their standards along the same route to the Menin Gate, to commemorate the last 100 days of WW1 and represent an entire generation that served while defending their country.
Robertsbridge Royal British Legion hopes to be able to send one standard and one wreath bearer to represent those who served from the village and surrounding areas. The cost of this is £1000 and although the RBL headquarters have informed branches that they can take this money from branch funds, we would rather use branch money to help others in need, in the many ways that the legion does. Therefore, our standard bearer Tony Wilson and ex Royal Marine Jerry Hodgson, are preparing for a sponsored cycle ride of 26 miles starting from Robertsbridge Station at 10 am on Sunday 22nd of July. They will visit the war memorials of Brightling, Sedlescombe, Staplecross, Bodiam and finally Robertsbridge..
If you can donate anything, however small , to help fund the trip and show your appreciation , it would be gratefully received. If you fancy it, you can even join in on the day! Just turn up with a bike and the energy you'll need.
Many thanks in advance.
Robertsbridge Royal British Legion deputy standard bearer, Paul Bielecki.
