Story
On Good Friday 1925, a Dulwich Hamlet team including the legendary Edgar Kail began a three-match tour of Germany by beating Altona 93 4-1 in front of a crowd of around 6,500. Both clubs had been founded in 1893. Altona was still an independent city (it did not become part of Hamburg until 1937) and FC 93 had been one of the founder members of the German FA in 1900. The Hamlet had won the FA Amateur Cup in 1920 and would go on to do so a further three times between 1932 and 1937.
In recent years, an extraordinary friendship has developed between the supporters of these two famous old clubs. In 2015, Altona 93 visited Champion Hill for a pre-season game. This July, to mark the 125th anniversary of both DHFC and FC 93, Dulwich will make a return visit to Altona in a repeat of that Easter match of 93 (spooky...) years ago.
Sadly, the anniversary has been overshadowed by the widely publicised actions of DHFC's landlord, an affiliate of a New York based real estate corporation. The club is currently having to ground-share at Tooting & Mitcham FC. To read more, visit savedulwichhamlet.org.uk.
On Easter Monday (2 April), the Hamlet are playing Kingstonian FC, another famous old amateur club which is having to ground-share. DHFC supporters (including Pedestrian Pete and Bristol-based beatmaster Guru Alexander) will be walking to the match (at Leatherhead FC) from Richmond Road, Kingstonian's traditional home until 1988 (9.6 miles). Click here for photos of the old Richmond Road ground.
True to the Hamlet's reputation as a community club par excellence, only half of the sponsorship money raised will go to the "Inter City 125" campaign to fund the costs of taking the team to Hamburg. The remainder will go to a cause that is, almost literally, dear to the heart of one of DHFC's keenest fans, Neil Cole. Neil is raising funds to place defibrillators in parks across our capital city. Click here to read the Evening Standard's report of his story.
In celebration of DHFC's anniversary, donations of £18.93 (or some multiple thereof) would be particularly gratefully received. Or if you are not able to donate £18.93 but would like to show your support for the club's struggle to return to the community which it serves so well, why not just "dial New York" (area code 212) by donating £2.12?
