    Story

We are a registered small charity, HMRC EW 37670 called Pennines Wildlife Rescue.

We are located in NE47 8AE Carrshield in the North Pennines and are saving the local wildlife since 3 years now.

Into our care has just recently come this young kestrel, veterinarian assessment of its injuries have identified a leg fracture that needed surgery.

    Please refer to the pictures.

We have chosen Robson&Prescott avian vets to carry out the surgery which took place on 09.12.2017 in Morpeth, please check the vet`s bill as seen in the pictures.

The surgery was critical, as the kestrel died twice during surgery but was successfully resuscitated by the vets and the leg was successfully realigned and fixated by metal parts and the bird now has an external fixator keeping the fracture in place to heal.

The kestrel is a bird of prey and needs his legs in full working condition in order to hunt and grab its prey, so surgery on the fracture was essential to rehabilitate the bird so it can be released back into the wild in future.

The vet bill for the surgery came to £ 602, of which we have already paid off £ 400 from our funds. Please refer to the pictures to check on this.

We are now delivering the after care for the kestrel and therefore need to raise more funds as we still have £200 unpaid from the current bill, plus the kestrel needs a specific diet which is costly and also needs to be seen in 2 weeks time to check the healing progress and at some point will need a second surgery to have the metal fixator removed.

All this will cost more money which we currently haven`t got so we are kindly asking the general public to chip in with a few pounds so this precious bird can be rehabilitated.

We aim to raise £500 to cover the current cost and vet bill but likely will need even more as we dont know yet how much the second surgery will be in 6 weeks time.

However, we try to take one step at a time so please consider supporting this worthy cause and make a donation. We also look after another kestrel who is severely concussed, an orphaned water vole, a concussed wood pigeon, an intoxicated herring gull to just name a few of the live stock we currently look after.

And , by the way, we do this with just 2 people, namely my husband Anthony and i.

Any amount, however small it might be, will help us so please make a donation to Pennines Wildlife Rescue.

Thank you so very much and a very happy merry Christmas to you and your families.

We would like to thank all those who have been donating so far, which enabled us to pay the full outstanding bill to the vets for the first op. However we are still in need for another £150 ( estimate by the vets) for the removal of the pins and for a new flight aviary. First research int this matter have come up with figures between £750 - £1000 for a flight aviary suitable for a bird of prey in recovery.

Close up of the fracture during op! The following phase is the phase of rehabilitation in a flight aviary, where the kestrel will need to demonstrate full use of his healed leg before he can be released back int the wild. We expect this to be a process of 6 - 8 weeks and we are in need not only for funds for the next op, but also for a new flight aviary, as our large flight aviary is currently occupied by a flock of doves and wood pigeons in recovery.
