Story
I’m raising money for brilliant Brighton young writing and mentoring charity Little Green Pig. On October 9th, I'm doing a sponsored Story Walk, linking sites along the south coast linked to classic children’s authors Oscar Wilde, Lewis Carroll and Rudyard Kipling. It’s a family-friendly six mile ramble, stopping along the way to read extracts of The Selfish Giant, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and the Jungle Book.
Little Green Pig believe that everyone, whatever their background, has a right to write and needs a space to create. We believe something special happens when you pick up a pen; we believe that writing grows self confidence, develops empathy, builds healthy communities, and promotes good communication. When we tell our stories, we discover who we are.
Little Green Pig work predominantly in Brighton and Sussex’s most deprived communities, both in and out of schools, including young people who have English as a second language, ensuring that children from all backgrounds have a chance to express themselves creatively, tell their stories and expand their horizons.
We have doubled in size over the last two years, both in terms of our income and the numbers of young people we work with; last year alone, we worked with over 420 young people. As well as printed storybooks, we have created comics, interactive online projects, soap operas, and an immersive walking tour about street homelessness.
My own involvement started when I ran two different writing projects, and saw directly the life-changing effect it had on the young people. In January this year, I became Chair of the Board.
Please sponsor me. Whether its £5, £50 or £100, every penny will go to providing free workshops for young people (have a look at littlegreenpig.org.uk). As schools offer fewer and fewer opportunities for imaginations to soar, it’s more vital than ever that we provide places where that can happen.

8 years agoFinal day and we're going for broke here - I've rashly upped the target to £2,000, and it's almost in sight. Thanks so much to everyone for being so generous to get us here.

8 years agoThanks so much for your incredible support - from an original target of £500, we're almost at £1,500. This little video shows the kind of thing your money helps us provide - this summer, we took over an empty gallery, created a pop-up writing centre, and with the support of 5 authors, 8 artists and a fantastic bunch of volunteers, provided 52 children with 92 creative experiences in story making, comic books and manga. Thanks to your help, we'll be able to do so much more. https://www.facebook.com/littlegreenpig/videos/1105159666233064/
