Story
Our programme has been running since early 2013 but we are self funded and desperately need your help to continue and expand our work. Every month volunteers visit Danang Protecting Social Centre to help the disabled children and elderly people that reside there. The aim is to develop the skills of our volunteers so they can learn how to care for disabled people. The volunteers help the residents to shower, prepare meals and develop the children’s social skills. We are a young developing organisation and would really the appreciate the help of foreign volunteers who have experience in this area.
Every month our volunteers visit disadvantaged, disabled people in their homes. The aim is to help them become more independent, financially and in other ways to enable them to integrate into society. Volunteers can help by spending time talking to them, cleaning, preparing meals, physical therapy sessions etc. depending on the needs of each individual.
Since 2013 English classes have been held every evening. We have recently been joined by Peter Hodson, a native, TESOL qualified English teacher who is living in Da Nang. Foreign volunteers are also on hand to teach the students.
Students from rural areas and those studying medical and health related courses are encouraged to attend. We hope that it is not simply a teacher-student relationship but also provides an opportunity for friendships to develop and to exchange cultural experiences.
Students are required to volunteer their time in return for English lessons. For every hour they learn English they are expected to donate one hour of their time to help less advantaged members of society.
This scheme has been fully funded by Tuan the disabled founder of Freewheeling Life and includes providing teaching materials, accommodation and meals for foreign volunteers. We are constantly looking for more volunteers who can support the scheme either financially, with their time or donate resources.
