Story

Peterborough Parkinson's 4 mile sponsored walk.

Sunday 16th September

Parkinson’s is a progressive, neurological condition caused by the lack of dopamine in the brain. There are many symptoms such as tremor, rigidity and slowness of movement. The cause is unknown, and as yet there is no known cure. The condition isn’t life threatening though symptoms do progressively get worse but these can be controlled using drug therapy treatment.

1 in 500 people in the UK has Parkinson’s & approximately 900 of those live in the Peterborough area.

Research has recently highlighted that exercise & keeping fit are key factors in slowing down the progression of Parkinson’s and the Peterborough branch hold several classes each week such as Pilates, Tai Chi, Aerobics and Dance & Movement classes that members attend and are suitable for all abilities. The branch have also recently launched a walking group.

Peterborough Parkinson’s is a totally self funded Charity and we rely heavily on fundraising and donations to help & support our members. Any fundraising & donations we do receive go towards funding our exercises classes & our coffee mornings.

We are always looking for opportunities to raise awareness in the community so we can reach out to those with Parkinson’s, their friends, families and carers who may not know about our branch. We offer help, support & friendship and to reassure them that they are not alone.

We have chosen a sponsored charity walk this year as the main fundraising event for our branch. This means we can include everyone whether they walk or just come & support on the day.
