    Story

Last Friday our brother, Peter McGarry, suffered a subarachnoid haemorrhage and is currently in hospital in Antigua in Guatemala. He has been in excruciating pain since, at times having to be sedated and restrained. Yesterday an MRI has shown that he has a brain aneurysm and needs surgery imminently. He is in a public hospital with limited resources, every time he needs a test, scan etc he has to be moved to a different hospital in another city. This puts him at risk of the aneurysm rupturing, which could be fatal. Every day his partner, Elvira has to go to the pharmacy to buy medications for the doctors to administer. She is not allowed to stay with him and this is causing him to get very distressed when she is not there.
Peter is a fighter, but he can't do this on his own. He needs your help. All of his family and friends have been offering support and wanting to help. So this is how you can. Please donate whatever amount you can to help us move him to a better hospital for the best treatment and surgery there, with a view to seeing if he can be moved back home to Belfast when his condition is stable. Advice from a consultant neurosurgeon in the UK who has seen his MRI results, is that "the aneurysm needs repaired, 50% chance of rebleed within 30 days with 80% mortality."
Please do what you can to help.

      Update from the Page owner

The justgiving fundraising is now finished. Thank you all for your kind donations. Peter is back in his home in Antigua and our parents are staying close-by. He will have another CT scan on Wednesday so hopefully his recovery continues and we will know more then on when he will be fit to fly home. Your overwhelming generosity has allowed Peter the best chance of fully recovering from this life-threatening condition. We couldn't have done it without you all. You are amazing!

One day to go and we have reached the target of £50000! Thanks for every single donation that has helped get us to this point. Peter had an appointment with the neurosurgeon today and had his stitches removed. He is able to go back to his home in Antigua tomorrow. The doctor wants to do another CT scan on Wednesday but he is very pleased with Peter's recovery so far. He said the surgery was one of the most difficult and complicated that he has ever performed so is quite surprised at how quickly Peter is improving. Thanks for everyone's support!

Four weeks ago we set up the justgiving page to raise funds to help with Peter's medical costs. We never expected the response there has been. It is a testament to the person my brother is, who has obviously touched the hearts of people all over the world. Especially in the places he calls home: Guatemala, Belfast and Tyrone. We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of friends, family and strangers. This has been such a positive in what has been mostly a very negative, worrying time. The page closes in 2 days so please continue to share.

Only 4 days left of the fundraising and we are so close to making the target! Thank you all for donating and sharing so far. Peter continues to do well, the pain and confusion are reducing every day. His next hospital appointment is on Friday so hopefully they will be happy with the progress he is making. Mum and dad are changing their flights to next week as they were due to leave on Thursday. We really appreciate every donation that has been made that has enabled Peter to get to this stage in his recovery. Thank you all again X
