Story
As some of you know, I am spending my summer in Kenya volunteering at Fountain Youth Initiative (FYI), a small local organization ran by a lovely small team of young locals who work hard to improve lives of vulnerable young people in Githurai community in the outskirt of Nairobi.
Fountain Youth Initiative manages 8 programmes (check www.fountainyouth.org) financed by contributions from a few donors, often their former volunteers, and by running a small poultry business.
Seeing on my own how hard and devoted the small team is and how much difference they make, I would love to contribute not only with my skills during my 5 weeks here, but also by raising funds for their Back to School Project.
Through the Back to School project, FYI helps 150 vulnerable children in 3 local primary schools by supplying each of them with books, pens, uniform and shoes at a cost of 20 USD/child/year, total cost being 3000 USD/year.
Although education as such is tuition-free in Kenya and the return of education for a child and its family is priceless, vulnerable families served by FYI cannot afford to pay these 20 dollars. In the environment where food and shelter are the key survival items, school supplies become a luxury.
That's where Fountain Youth Initiative steps in and that's where I would very much appreciate your help as well. I believe that 20 USD (pretty much a cost of a lunch out in Brussels) is not much for most of us living in more favorable conditions, yet it means a year of education (and better prospects for life) for a poor kid here in Githurai.
I would be grateful for any contribution, small or big, and so would be the FYI team.
I am really happy I was invited to volunteer with this wonderful organization. As I work with the FYI team every day, I can see how much they are doing for the local community. If at the end of my stay I could chip in with funds you helped me put together, it would mean a world to me.

Dearest all, I want to give you my most sincere thank yous for helping me collect funds for the Back to School project. In the end, Fountain Youth Initiative is able to cover the cost of schooling for 150 children in Githurai and Busia for next school year. Fountain is currently getting uniforms tailored and buying schoolbooks. We will distribute the supplies in early January and I will be able to report back to you directly from the Kenya! This has been a great success because of each and every precious heart of your. Thank you. A lot.

8 years agoWhen I set up this initiative with 1000GBP target, I thought I was too ambitious. I still cannot believe we are only 400 GPB away from the 2300 GBP (3000 USD) limit needed to finance the whole Back to School program for next year. There are now words to express how grateful I am that you made this happen! Huge thanks for all your generous contributions. We have 9 days to go. Still a chance to share with friends and/ or donate to finance a year of education for poor kids in Githurai, Kenya! Are we going to make it all the way to 2300?

8 years agoThis is unbelievable! We hit the target only after 11 days! I wish you could all be in our office when we discovered this today! I don't have enough words to express how grateful I feel. I will say a simple and sincere Thank you! and send big hugs to all who donated, shared and supported us. The page will keep running for another 37 days. The actual amount needed for full 1 year funding of Back to School is 3000 USD (about 2300 GBP). Please, keep sharing. :) On behalf of our 150 children - thank you. The impact is priceless.
