    Story

    Dear Parents & Carers,

This year, one of our new whole-school initiatives is to ensure the children have a full understanding of saving the planet and sustainability. As you may have seen, all of our classrooms and office spaces now have new recycling bins, and the paper will be collected each week by elected ‘eco-warriors’ from each class, to be recycled.

As part of this new initiative, I am also really excited to announce our new project: The Pickhurst Allotment & Farm.

The idea is to transform our current 'garden' area to a fantastic space for the children to learn about growing their own vegetables and food, which can then be used by the school kitchen and/or given to the families of Pickhurst. Additionally, we would like to start our own farm, starting with some chickens to look after.

Looking after animals has been proven to have many benefits and positive influences on children - Learning to care for animals and treating them with kindness is an experience that children can easily transfer to their relationships with other humans too. It helps to build empathy, understanding and respect for both their peers and adults. Also, their tasty eggs can be used, once again, in the school kitchen as well as for families of Pickhurst.

Our plan is to design the allotment and farm as soon as possible, and then run small groups & clubs for children to attend and take turns in growing/looking after it. We hope you agree that this is an exciting new project for us as a school, and we cannot wait to get our wellies & gloves on and get stuck in!

Our school council have already been thinking hard about how we can raise funds to start up this new project, such as a non-uniform day.

Children can come to school in their own clothes (not fancy dress) on Friday 27th September. We kindly ask that the children donate £1 towards this fundraising project, however you are obviously welcome to donate more if you wish to.

If you would like to make any further donations to help start up our new allotment & farm, it would be very much appreciated!

Donations will help go towards the following: gardening equipment, allotment boxes, chicken coop, chicken feed, a member of staff to oversee the project and run additional clubs and group sessions during the school day so that EVERY child has the opportunity to visit and work on the allotment and farm.

Donations can be made easily via our JustGiving page:

Thank you so much for your ongoing & continued support. All donations, of any amount, will be greatly appreciated, and we cannot wait to share updates with you on how the project is coming together!

    Kind regards,

    Mr Siggs , Principal
