    Story

On 30th July I'm completing the Prudential Ride London, a 100 mile bicycle ride to raise money for Emma Getvoldsen...

At 18 Emma was admitted to hospital with severe abdominal pain which over the years proved difficult to diagnose & treat. Emma required surgery for ovarian cysts & was told she had polycystic ovaries. Eventually, endometriosis was discovered & several further operations were performed. Despite not having a family of her own, at 34, in 2013 Emma made the very difficult decision to have a hysterectomy (including the removal of both of her ovaries) hoping this would give her the quality of life she needed.

Unfortunately at the start of 2016, Emma was admitted to hospital with severe pain again and in April she had an exploratory operation in which it was discovered that she had a pelvic mass which proved to be a very rare condition called Ovarian Remnant Syndrome. The syndrome occurs if this ovarian tissue causes severe pelvic pain &/or a pelvic mass. Unfortunately in Emma's case the remnant was fully functioning, had its own blood supply & was causing a huge surge of hormones to be released on a constant basis which also causes complications.

In August 2016, Emma had major surgery & three weeks later was devastated to be told that the operation had been unsuccessful & a scan showed that there was now a large cyst attached to the ovarian remnant, the endometriosis had returned & there was also extensive scar tissue which had caused all of her abdominal organs to fuse together. Due to the potential complications & the high risks of life changing damage the Specialist that had previously operated decided that he was no longer prepared to continue surgically treating Emma.

Emma has found a specialist centre the USA who's surgeons have operated on over 100 cases similar to hers, with 100% success rate. They are also specialists in the removal of endometriosis & adhesions.

Funds raised will help get Emma to America for the operation and recovery.

Sadly Emma's had some more bad news :( "I wish I could update everyone with some good news. I really, really wanted to. Unfortunately things didn't go as hoped this morning and it's not good news. My ureter hadn't healed enough & I had to have laser treatment & another stent fitted. This new stent needs to be in place for a further 8-10 weeks & if I haven't healed after that then I'll need open surgery & to have my ureter removed & an alternative fitted. The other bad news is that I will have to self catheterise for the rest of my life"

My latest 'long' ride. Due to lack of time, I've not been able to do as much training as I'd hoped, so I'm training smarter! By cycling hilly routes (and let's face it there's plenty to choose from in the Chilterns!) and by cycling these hills out of my saddle or in a gear or two harder than I'd usually cycle, I'm incorporating resistance. Fortunately my running and tae kwon do are helping my overall fitness too! https://www.strava.com/activities/1020775214

A 28 mile training ride completed yesterday - slow going with road tyres on the canal path! Weekend distance increases from here... in theory. https://www.strava.com/activities/998818504
