Story
The River Stour should look like the above picture along every inch of its 58 mile length, but it doesn't. On the 12th of June Plastic Free Canterbury and our partners at the Kentish Stour Countryside Partnership, the Canterbury Society and Friends of Kingsmead Field will be rolling up our sleeves and putting on our waders to clear waste from the river. We will also be walking a 26 mile marathon length of the river from Chartham to Pegwell Bay, logging the waste that we find for future clear up operations. We aim to remove 1,000 pieces of plastic waste from our Stour, and any other rubbish that we find. Plastic pollution is a problem across our district and we are determined to do something about it. Plastic Free Canterbury engages with local schools, colleges, businesses and community organisations in order to help decrease their use of plastic and improve their recycling processes. All funds raised will assist our educational and community outreach programmes and improve the environment for everyone.

Plastic Free Canterbury
3 years agoAs well as the four teams clearing the river one of our teams walked a marathon length of the Great Stour, from Chartham to Pegwell Bay. They attracted attention from several people as they braved the pollen, nettles and heat, spreading the word about Plastic Free and what we can all do to limit our plastic consumption and maximise recycling.

3 years agoThank you to the many people who took part. To see more pictures from the four sites that we cleared please take a look at our Facebook page. Our walking group completed the Chartham to Pegwell Bay marathon in the evening, after bouts of hay fever, blisters and one member nearly falling in a well! Thank you again to everyone who has donated, please continue to spread the word so that we can get closer to our £1,000 target so that we can help more schools, community groups and businesses reduce their plastic use and improve their recycling.

Let's get back to the old days when it was usual to have glass bottles. Remember the doorstep milk deliveries? Delivered one day, empty bottles collected the next!
