    Story

From April 2019, we are losing 66% of our funding from Hertfordshire County Council (HCC), which represents one third of our total annual income. Having seen the reduction in spending by Councils at all levels we had taken steps to develop other funding streams. However, as many will know from experience this takes time to build, and with this massive reduction, the blow has come too soon, and without help we cannot fill the gap.

Since Pro-Action’s birth in 2008, HCC has provided core funding which has enabled us to provide the services that Members have enjoyed over the years. During that time we have experienced a reduction in the grants available from HCC, including support for the Children & Youth Workforce Training, which ended about 3 years ago. Unfortunately very few funders support umbrella organisations like Pro-Acton, so our reliance on HCC support has been significant thus the impact of the loss is greater.

We are holding discussions with HCC to review its decision and make the reduction over a longer period, which gives us a fighting chance of building our income. We are also working to identify other possible funding within HCC that supports our core offer of Quality, Safeguarding and Wellbeing.

Pro-Action is the only countywide organisation providing focused support to Children’s & Young People’s organisations. 50% of respondents in a recent membership survey were unable to identify where they would go for the support and services if Pro-Action did not exist.

Our vision is for “Every young person in Hertfordshire to access high quality opportunities and provision to enhance their growth and development.”

The Trustee Board and Team believe that we provide vital services to the children and youth sector in Hertfordshire and are passionate about developing a culture where every individual engaging with children and young people works to:

    • Create places where children & young people can go, where they are welcomed and can be themselves, have supportive adults around, be challenged by opportunities to do new things where they can grow in confidence, calculate risks and learn to work alongside others.

    • Reach high and provide the highest quality of provision, support and opportunities that they can, so wherever children or young people go they receive an enriching experience.

This is particularly important in the current environment where funding has been drained from youth services across the board and open access work has suffered significantly as a result. At the same time issues being faced by young people are hitting the headlines around mental health, obesity, crime, homelessness & poverty. We are convinced that there is even greater need for open and accessible youth and children’s work, not less.

If Pro-Action becomes unsustainable due to this big reduction, where will the smaller organisations we support turn for the benefits we provide?

Without the funding we cannot continue.

    What Pro-Action Herts Does...

Our work, in a nut shell, is supporting children and young people across Hertfordshire...by providing expert knowledge, support and advice to the volunteers and workers in the play settings and youth clubs, on the key areas of safeguarding, well-being and quality. We do this by also offering YAMA branded events for young people and training to the largely volunteer workforce!

We are a Membership organisation and our membership is primarily organisations from the voluntary sector. Our membership covers a wide range of children and young people’s interests - sports, dance, youth, arts, play, faith based organisations, uniformed groups such as Police Cadets, statutory organisations and many more. These groups are all invited to attend our YAMA events, as seen above.

We support and encourage the leaders and volunteers who provide those opportunities. A key example is Jo Collier, a Hertfordshire native, who shares her story here:

We currently support over 150 organisations. This represents over 20,000 young people and children, 2,500 volunteers and 1,000 full and part-time paid staff.

Pro-Action has stood for high quality provision and opportunities for children and young people. For the creation of safe places for them, not just written in policies, but in practice on the ground. We believe in the power and value of local clubs, run by passionate people, for whom there is never enough support. We are proud to be associated with so many people who sacrifice time and energy to provide great opportunities for the young. In a recent survey of our Membership, half of respondents stated they didn’t know where they would find the services that Pro-Action provides if we weren’t here, certainly not in one place. This concerns us, which is why we believe we still have a unique role in the County and need to fight to keep providing the services we offer.

This is where we need your support. Any amount donated will help maintain our work to support the workers who are working with young people of today, the children of today, tomorrow’s future.
