I am a minister of a local church in Plymouth, UK. In September 2016, I visited one of the poorest countries in Europe. Moldova! A friend took me around and showed me 2 families who have very little means, who are in desperate need of help. I returned and spoke to my young people at church in Plymouth, and suggested we go to Moldova for 2 weeks and do something for these families and provide some dignity and pride to their lives.
Here are their stories.
1. Elena is a single mom, with 3 children. Her husband is abusive, and non-supportive, so the court ruled against him and banned him from seeing them or coming near them. Elena works two jobs (one cleaning job, and one at a local metal scrap yard.) She struggles to make ends meet. Elena lives in a small house, and has a make-shift summer kitchen. A summer kitchen is a place where Moldovans cook to preserve food for the winter. During summer, fruit and vegetables are very cheap. They buy these from the local market and cook them to preserve for winter. During winter crops do not grow, produce is expensive and unobtainable. Elena needs a summer kitchen to cook and preserve her food for the cold winters. We want to help Elena to dismantle her make shift kitchen and build a proper kitchen, as well as support children with school, and domestic needs
2. Helena is 65 years old & lives with her granddaughter Andrea who is 11 years old. They live in an unfinished house, no bathroom, kitchen, doors, windows, and leaking roof. Her husband separated from her & divided the house in two. He sold his part to a third party and left with the money, leaving her with the other half and no capital to sustain, nor complete the work. They cook on a 2-plate cooker, and washes in a basin they bring from outside. We would like to help Helena and Andrea fix their house.
18-31 August 2017 - 13 Young people will undertake this project. They will pay their flights and accommodation.
