Story
The bad news came to us on January 10th 2018, when my partner Kamila (35) and I learnt she had Stage-3 Nasopharynx Cancer (nasopharyngeal carcinoma - very rare and challenging to treat). The good news is that this is curable cancer, but due to the location of this particular cancer (inside the head, in nasopharynx) surgery is not an option.
The treatment (a combination of Chemotherapy & IMRT Radiotherapy) comes with a very high risk of long-term issues due to the high doses of radiation being delivered to adjacent non-cancerous tissues. The side effects of traditional IMRT are long-term complications such as xerostomia, deafness, hypothyroidism, osteo necrosis, cataract, ocular risks, numbness and weakness the hands, blurred vision, second malignancy and many more. This is a really long and scary list…(far too long).
All Kamila is offered here in the UK is to treat the cancer their way and live with these long-term complications. The most important thing for Kamila is to cure the cancer but her long-term quality of life is also a massive concern, especially as a mum of two little children.
There is an option to preserve long-term quality of life for all of us – Proton Beam therapy. All studies show that this kind of treatment is the best for Nasopharynx cancer (giving less side effects during and after the treatment), but unfortunately not yet available in the UK.
We found and contacted an established Proton Beam therapy centre in Munich that offers this treatment and has experience in treating Nasopharynx Cancer. They have agreed to treat Kamila.
Unfortunately NHS refused to fund the treatment (even though this type of cancer is on their list for Proton Beam Therapy abroad, they said there is some additional criteria, which she doesn’t meet).
We have been given the choice to accept the standard UK treatment and the high possibility of long-term complications or we personally fund the Proton Therapy treatment ourselves giving Kamila the best possible chance to be cured and significantly reducing the risk of long-term complications.
The Munich treatment costs £40,000. This is a huge sum of money to payout (upfront). We need to pull this amount together by the end of March.
We are doing everything to pull the funds together, but will need some help to make this happen. So we ask all our friends, family and Just giving community to help us at that hard point in our life.
We need any donation, no matter how big or small, to help Kamila to go through this radical treatment.
We ask that you give what you can and to share this page to get us as much help as possible.
We promise we will update you on every step we do.

6 years agoHi everyone. Two weeks ago, Kamila ended her proton therapy in Munich. After the end of the exposure, we were informed by the attending physician that the whole cancerous tumor was liquidated. We have to wait until everything is healed after the exposure and after about 3 months we will make scans to check that everything is ok. Kamila is slowly recovering. Thank you all for your help and support !!!!

6 years agoBut the doctor decided that there would be only 4 additional exposures. We have two days behind us so Kamila has only two days left. The therapy will end on 15/5/18. Kamila has very bad side effects, but he does not give up. we had to stay in Munich because of Kamila's well-being. But only two days and Kamila will recover with family and friends. THANK YOU ALL FOR HELP AND SUPPORT

6 years agoHI EVERYONE. On wendsday Kamila completed 27 proton treatments. We had a conversation with a doctor who informed us that everything from the lymph nodes disappeared and there was almost nothing left in the primary tumor. For this reason, the doctor decided to shorten the period of exposures, but increase the dose of rays to finish the leftovers. The number of fields was reduced from 4 to 2 and only the place where the primary tumor WAS exposed. Originally, Kamila was supposed to finish the therapy on 17/5/18.
