    Story

I am going to run 10K for 5 days in a row in order to raise money to fund part of my trip and to pay for some medical equipment from Nepal as recommended from Work the World. This will enable myself to learn nepalese culture, some of their language and to help Nepalese children be treated with better equipment and some toys that will help distract them painful procedures.

Within our local hospital trust that I have worked in for the past 4 years I have noticed due to the help our country is receiving from the Gurkha army our local nepalese population has increased largely over these years.During my experience of caring for the Nepalese community I have felt that their culture is not as well understood as some other cultures.

When training to be a nurse we are governed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council 'The Code' which states you should treat people with '...kindness, respect and compassion.' I feel that as I find that I have a lack of knowledge of the nepalese culture and community I cannot go the extra mile and provide a more personalised and sensitive approach to care as I can with my other patients which saddens me.

In order to educate myself and bring back new knowledge and experiences to share with my colleagues I have planned a trip to Nepal. The healthcare in Pokhara Nepal is not the same as we receive in the NHS, they have limited services, equipment and facilities to protect patients the way we do here. Only a very small amount of residents in Pokhara are entitled to 'free' healthcare and that still only covers consultation and treatment, minor surgery, obstetric emergencies, basic and comprehensive obstetric care, radiographs, laboratory services, essential drugs (for a week) and transport by ambulance to a higher-level facility when a patient is referred.

The state of health-care financing in Nepal is weak, as over 60% of the population lacks quality access to basic essential care such as maternity services .
