    Story

My name is Wale and every Christmas I visit the Gambia, Serrukunda region to run a football camp for a couple weeks, at the Raptim Football Academy.

Football is a source of pleasure and entertainment for millions unable to indulge in leisure pursuits out of the financial reach of many in the world. Football has the power to create unity out of division, joy from sadness and bring welcome respite from a continent bursting with life but burdened by problems. Yet, for millions of people in Africa as well as the rest of the world, poverty is their daily reality - and for these the importance of the beautiful game cannot be underestimated.

As an F.A trained football coach my mission there is to provide free coaching and guidance to the local children who would otherwise may not have access to a qualified coach to develop their footballing talents.

The Academy is run by Julius, as an Academy they train 5 days a week. Sessions normally last between 1.5 to 2 hours however on many occasions we continue long into the afternoon. The age group of the academy ranges from 7 years of age to 19 years of age.

The Raptim Football Academy is provided for talented individuals who can show their ability and passion to perform as individual players but also building relationships within the team.

The project promotes getting children off the streets and engaged in team sports that develop teamwork, creative flair and confidence.

Children that show potential talent will be coached to make most of their talents, giving them an opportunity to succeed as individuals.

In fact one of the girls from the girls team has been selected to play for the Gambia U17’s team as recently as October 2017!

My xmas Training sessions consist of fitness drills, football skill based tasks, teamwork drills and game situations. At the end of football camp, from the donations given to me. I give each and every boy/girl a top, shorts or socks.

    How you can help

I try to promote the donation of old unwanted football clothing, footwear and equipment from volunteer’s, friends, families and the general public. When and where possible I provide the kit directly to the boys and girls who need it most within the projects or local area. I will make funding available for children who will need to travel in order to play at Raptim Academy. Any donations or money raised for Raptim Football Academy is pumped back into the project allowing new equipment to be purchased and a vital opportunity for expansion and ultimately offering football and a community project to a larger audience.
