Story

There is a stigma attached to men suffering from depression particularly in South Africa where it is still not understood for the disease it actually is. My only brother Deon had a very hard life, he had a heartbreaking secret from his childhood which he only shared in recent years. He had a very bad accident which resulted in him not being able to work and he was retired with a small pension. He married a lady named Karen with severe epilepsy and other difficulties and tried his best to support her. He was like a live in carer. They had a miracle child called Kilana and due to not being able to leave her with her mum he would do small taxi rounds during school hours. Karen was involved in an accident and was in hospital for a number of months damaging her foot permanently. Then 5 years ago our wonderful dad, Chris, was diagnosed with Cancer and passed away 6 weeks later. Our mother was deaf and alone in a small town in the middle of nowhere, we had no means to move her but we checked on her all day every day. Then 18 December 2017 she went in for a pacemaker and had a massive stroke and heart attack which left her only able to open her eyes, she couldn't move, speak, eat she was trapped in a shell. We watched her suffer and she passed away 10 January 2018. Deon had to go for an emergency hernia op, he lost 20 kg and declined rapidly into a very dark depression which he hid so we'll from the world, until it was too late. He went missing last week Thursday and returned home on Friday with marks around his neck. I only found out on Monday and made him an emergency appointment with the Dr. I emailed her and explained what had been happening. He was made an appointment for Tuesday morning at the hospital but he hung himself. We are so bereft. We are scrambling together to go back to SA to bury him and support his wife and child but I truly don't know how. The flights cost £3500 which has ruined us. His wife only has the R250 I sent in Monday. Please help us.

Deon's funeral was Wednesday 8 Augustus at 11am. He had a lovely send off. Many people spoke about how he had helped them when he didn't even have much himself. His Parabat friends carried him in their uniforms and saluted him. His daughter Kilana is 13 years old, she played Amazing Grace on her guitar and sang for her daddy. We really appreciate your kind wishes, your donations and your love. You are amazing. God bless every one of you and your families with his richest blessings. You have kept us standing.
