    Story

Refugee Children’s Centres provide an escape from the harsh reality of life on a refugee camp, offering valuable play-based learning experiences, exciting and stimulating activities and a space for creative expression.

Children in refugee camps have experienced traumatic events in their lives, from the terrors of war and the loss of loved ones to dangerous journeys and brutality at the hands of those who should have been there to protect them. They continue to live in an environment that is uncertain and ever-changing.

The effects of trauma, stressful experiences and lack of appropriate stimulating experiences in the formative years can create gaps in a child’s development, causing lifelong negative impacts. Many refugee children have been out of the education system for a long time and some young children may never have accessed early years’ provision at all. For some children, the time spent in a refugee camp is all that they know and will make up their earliest memories.

We believe these memories should be happy memories.

Play is an essential part of childhood, enabling the development of vital physiological, social and emotional skills. It allows children to build self-confidence and to develop secure and trusting relationships with others; it is a means of freedom of self-expression, healing and happiness. A sense of wonder and challenge and a desire to explore and discover is the foundation for the desire to learn. Play as a form of therapy removes the barriers to learning.

The right to play is recognised by the United Nations as a fundamental right of every child.

Refugee Children’s Centres provides a place that meets this most basic fundamental right.

We would be delighted if you could support us in delivering this vital service.

Your donation will go directly towards resources for the centres and supporting long-term volunteers.

Thank you from the Refugee Children’s Centres Team.
