Story
ADAM PARTRIDGE first visited Dominica in 1998, when working as an art auctioneer on board Carnival Cruise Lines MS Fascination. The ship stopped at Dominica every Tuesday and it immediately became Adam’s favourite island due in the most part to the unique topography and nature of the island, as well as the friendliness of its people.
Soon after, Adam met Clare, who was also working on MS Fascination, and their first date was in Dominica around July 1998. She shared his love for the island and at this point, they vowed that one day they would build a home there. They have since got married and achieved their ambition as Hillside House & Apartments was finished and open to visitors in January 2017.
RAISING FUNDS
Adam & Clare visited Dominica in January 2018, to assess the damage caused by Hurricane Maria, which struck on 18th September 2017 causing widespread destruction. 90% of the buildings were damaged or destroyed, trees and crops wiped out and around 80 people perished, with many more suffering illness and death in the weeks following.
Whilst Hillside House itself was largely unaffected, it was shocking to see how much devastation had been caused all around the island, with some places far more affected than others.
The photos on the website were taken during their visit in January and show entire houses, schools, medical centre, library and many other signs of destruction.
At the point of their visit in January, the island was still largely without power, except for the capital Roseau, and this is likely to be the case for at least several more months.
Imagine being without power for more than 6 months already!
The aim of the event is to raise much-needed funds to help the island rebuild. Specific targets include but are not limited to –
- Rehoming/rebuilding for the most vulnerable in society - the young and the elderly
- Rebuilding Grand Bay Primary & Secondary Schools
- Providing solar lighting
- Providing essential health & medical supplies
- Providing school equipment including computers, books and furniture
- Water filters
- Essential supplies for women & babies
There are numerous projects for which we are raising funds so please contact Adam for further details, or if there is something that you would particularly like to sponsor.
Adam also sponsors and helps to coach STAZ, the youth cricket academy in Dominica, and is collecting donated cricket and other sport kit to ship out later this year, when we aim to send a container of various charity supplies.
