    Story

When people ask “Ruth, what do you do?, I say whatever it takes. As the Director of Re-imagine Resource Centre I love all things creative and anyone who knows me knows I was born to make things but even more I want to play a part in addressing the global challenges we face.

In order to leave no one behind, it is important that we think beyond our own fields of activity. We live in an interconnected world and through collaborative action waste resources can be used to create a better lifestyle for everyone and to showcase the elements of creative reuse towards ethical living goals.

Anyone who has visited knows Re-imagine is a place of creativity, and tries to address poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, racism, and encourage peace and unity but we need your help to keep this journey going.

At Re-Imagine we are always finding creative ways to help look after our planet by collecting waste materials that businesses normally just throw away and was started in 2013 for two reasons. First, to help save and use the materials we already have on our planet. Second to help people who would like to use art, craft and play materials but can’t afford them.

The centre is a hub of creative energy and is a lot of folks happy place, an environment where children and adults can share and learn. For a very small charge items can be taken away or made on site and this means items are redirected from landfill.

We support families, charities, community groups, schools, colleges, nurseries, crafting crews, artists, social activists, makers, small businesses, parents and guardians.

We also provide groceries and meals for those who are struggling and need some extra help with food, we have a food waste programme because food brings people together in so many ways. Whether it’s sharing a meal, cooking a healthy dinner or growing your own vegetables to eat, good eating can enhance lives beyond a meal and during this unprecedented time we know that more than ever.

The Re-imagine Community Kitchen is where we share our philosophy about food and not only to give out food from the Solidarity Larder (which we have run for 2 years) where there is a need, but also running teaching workshops for folks to learn new cooking skills and develop planet positive relationships with food and their waste.

In these uncertain times our community needs us more than ever, so we have kept going during this time despite the site where our store is based being closed completely and we are unsure when we will reopen. All 15 of our major events (including festivals, community gatherings & art shows) we were booked for have been cancelled or rebooked for next year.

We have provided weekly doorstep deliveries of groceries and meals, plus continued to provide eco-creative resource packs, along with collecting and redistributing toiletries.  For our business partners and community we have been making fabric face masks and have continued to be a place of support.

We support over 450 charities and groups with resources and donations, they have come to depend on us. In 7 years we have supported ourselves without any funding, everything the store makes we put back into it, but now with no customers, no events and no income,  it’s getting harder to continue the work we do, but we will not give up.

So this appeal is to help keep Re-imagine going and make sure we can still deliver the groceries to those in need along with creative packs to help keep the children happy and engaged with essential crafting items for adults and children for their mental health wellness.

Hopefully we will be able to open again soon but this will cost money to ensure peoples safety when they come to the centre, and we just do not have this, as most of the funds have been used to ensure people who need food do not go without and those groups that needed crafting resources have them.

We desperately need a bigger van for collecting and delivering, new large lidded storage containers, postal boxes for the craft kits, hot food transportation crates, food packaging for drinks and meals, a printer label maker, a clear fronted Fridge, insulation for the new Restore workshop (an off-site location we are using while our site is closed), essential craft supplies, help with our weekly food costs, plus petrol costs for our volunteer drivers.

Please give what you can, every act of generosity counts and I’m so grateful that you have taken the time to read this and are considering a donation. I can assure you my dedication to my community is as strong as my commitment to the planet.

Our eco-credentials are fierce and our strategy remains the same, to actively seek out ways to reduce the waste in our community, to redirect waste materials to help people and educate folks onward to a beautiful, rewarding and fulfilling reuse journey.

Thank you for your support it will make a big difference to many without.

Update on the reopening of Reimagine the council at present time are preventing this as priority is to traffic going to the recycle centre surrounding Reimagine. This might change soon but due to vehicle restrictions entering the site its difficult. She manages to support those in need of food by delivering to as many people as possible that are referred to her, but this is at her own expense as there has been no other financial assistance. So please spread the word about this story, there may be other ways people can help.

Having a Community Larder in Mepal has been a big help to our family and many others. I know it isn't much but we wanted to give back to help you help others too.
