Story
Our wonderful Alfie was taken from us too soon. He was a loved family member. The cause of death was CRGV also known as Alabama Rot, a disease that seems to be increasing. We as owners need to be aware of the symptoms as early diagnosis is key. Talk to your vet immediately about your concerns. What you need to ask is that your vet considers your concerns and does a blood test and urine test immediately. We want to raise funds to print posters to share with vets and dog owners. This disease is killing our dogs and little is still known about it.
Within 4 days Alfie died - we remain heartbroken but in his memory we want to help stop this happening to others.
Alfie was not my dog, he was my best dogmate though! He was a gentle and happy dog that was loved by all. RIP Alfie and I will have your dentastix ready for when we meet again.
Thank you

4 years agoFinal part: I am going to be personally involved in taking skin swabs from local toads in the very near future, to see if they are carrying any organisms of interest. Our Bristol project is about to hit the Veterinary press and I will send you a copy as soon as it is published. THANK YOU to everyone who has donated

4 years agoPart 2 update: Bristol Vet School have recently isolated a unique A. hydrophila isolate from dogs, and this is in the process of being sent to the lab in Edinburgh to be made into a new specific antibody test since the existing test was made from a standard laboratory isolate which had no history but wouldn't have been from a dog. This means that the new antibody test will be specifically for the 'dog' isolate, which will be much more meaningful.

4 years ago5th Feb 2020 update from Fiona (in several parts): My project is being supported by DEFRA at Bristol University and David Walker. As a result of your fundraising we have some exciting preliminary results from the international blood sampling. Also thanks to you we already have results from over 80 UK dogs, and 50% of these showed an immune response to A. hydrophila.

I miss Alfie everyday but all the wonderful donations and the kindness of strangers may help save others from having to miss their dogs due to CRGV.
