Story
A step towards improving global mental health!
It is likely that every single one of us has experienced or been exposed to poor mental health at some stage in our lives. It has become A global epidemic and while some countries progress with research, training and treatment , others lack resources to provide support to those affected.
Through my studies in psychology and my work with looked after young people, I often see the impact of poor mental health first hand and when I was approached with the opportunity to travel to sri lanka to learn more about how to support service users and gain an understanding of challenges faced cross culturally regarding mental health , I decided to put my name forward!
What's involved?
On the 9th of July I will be joining the SLV team of volunteers in Sri Lanka for 5 weeks. SLV and its partnership charity, Samutthana, the King's College London resource centre for trauma, displacement and mental health in Sri Lanka provide fantastic training and hands on experience for psychology students and graduates, allowing knowledge and skills to be shared with the aim to promote mental health awareness and treatment globaly.
My placement will involve volunteering in psychiatric facilities with service users at varying stages of their recovery, teaching English in the community and schools and working with individuals who have additional needs to reduce stigma and improve current resources. I will work with local professionals to provide much needed stimulation and human contact to improve wellbeing and increase self-esteem.
This placement will not only be valuable in providing support to vulnerable individuals in the local community, it will also allow me, through training and hands on experience, broaden my knowledge and skills whilst practising at home.
What will your donation go towards?
Any donation however little would be hugely appreciated. Funds raised will go towards placement and training fees, essential vaccinations and flights to Sri Lanka.
Funds will also help my home stay and the family who will be looking after me throughout my placement.
