I'm raising £500 to support Linkage Community Trust in honour and remembrance of former Micronclean employee, Richard Gascoigne

Story

In 2019, following increasing reports of forgetfulness and confusion, Richard was diagnosed with stage 1 Alzheimer's, this was shortly before his 47th birthday. Alzheimer’s brain plaque is estimated to affect 60% of people with Down Syndrome by the age of 60 years old, in contrast to a UK diagnosis rate of 0.9% of people without Down Syndrome aged between 60 and 65 years old.

Unfortunately, once the COVID-19 lockdown measures began to relax, Richard's condition had begun to progress significantly and it was no longer feasible for him to return to work. His colleagues maintained contact with him outside of work, including going out for walks or visits to his Linkage home in Louth.

Richard Gascoigne joined the Micronclean Roman Bank site on a work placement organised through Linkage Community Trust in the 1990’s, and some years later and following a move to Linkage’s Seaton House in Louth, he began employment at our Louth site in 2007.

Richard was a very loved and popular employee, not only by his colleagues but also our customers, and he became the highlight of audit tours.

Richard was known for his cheekiness and banter, his charm and his singing. He was passionate about football and would enjoy banter over scores and match predictions with his colleagues. Also, he would often serenade his colleagues to the songs on the radio.

Outside of work, Richard enjoyed social opportunities and nights out with his friends from Linkage, and meals out with his colleagues from the Micronclean Louth site. Every evening would end with a speech from Richard, which was always well received and he enjoyed the attention and applause.

After a short period in hospital, Richard succumbed to his illness and passed away in July 2024. He is still very much missed by his friends and colleagues.

The Micronclean EDI Committee are holding a variety of internal workplace events over 2026 to honour and remember Richard.

In response to external interest in supporting our cause, this Just Giving page has been created to allow those outside of Micronclean to donate and show support. Any money collected will be added to our internal collection and donated to Linkage Community Trust.

Linkage Community Trust is a registered charity that supports people with learning disabilities across Lincolnshire and Yorkshire. They deliver high quality care, day services, employment support, sensory outreach and specialist further education.

Linkage could not make a difference without the support of individuals, local communities and their corporate partners.

Micronclean Limited has had a strong working relationship with the trust for over 30 years, working with their employment liaison team and offering employment opportunities across a number of our sites and departments.
