** UPDATE ON MEDICAL CENTRE FUNDRAISING ** Thank you so much to everyone who has donated. We have now reached and exceeded our target!! We have informed the community that the Medical Centre will be completed and they were so grateful and so excited. In order to get the building completed within the next three weeks, we will be transferring the majority of the funds raised and work will commence on Monday 4th December. The building will hopefully be ready for an official opening ceremony on Friday 8th December! Thank you all again !
We have decided to keep the fundraising page open as we've been made aware that more people would like to donate over the coming weeks. Additional funds raised will go towards furnishing the medical centre and, if enough funds are raised, a new school roof for the primary school in Robuya. The current roof is over 35 years old and has rusted away leaving big holes. During rainy season it is very difficult for the school as the classrooms frequently flood.
Anymore support for this community would be so appreciated!
Thanks again!
** ORIGINAL POST **
Hello and thank you for visiting our Just Giving page!
We are a group of 14 volunteers from the UK and Sierra Leone currently working in a number of communities in Makeni, Sierra Leone.
Sierra Leone was hugely affected by the Ebola outbreak in 2014 and is now considered one of the 10 poorest countries in the world according to the Human Development Index. We are working closely with the local YMCA branch in Makeni as part of their Post-Ebola Recovery Project. Our work aims to empower the young people from two of the most affected communities, Robuya and Masuba, and help lift them out of poverty.
After spending a month working within the communities, we have become close to the community members, elders and Chief in Robuya. It has become clear that there is wide spread concern over the community's lack of access to a medical facility. Two years ago, the community started building a Medical Clinic (pictured above and below), however, due to limited funds the project was abandoned. We would therefore like to raise funds to complete this project for the community as it would make such a valuable and important impact on hundreds of people's lives.
After speaking to local contractors and suppliers, we have calculated that cost for the Medical Centre would be £1000. This would include cement for the floor, panels for the roof/ceiling, paint, doors/windows as well as general furniture. Previously, the community has applied to have a permanent doctor in the area, however, as there is no current medical facility, the government will not station a doctor in Robuya. With your support, we could continue the work on the original site and provide a crucial space for a permanent community doctor to be based.
Any donation would be so appreciated by us volunteers and the community members of Robuya.
Many thanks for your support!

6 years agoThe team has now left Sierra Leone after an incredible 10 weeks working on projects across the community. We have competed the Medical Centre project and handed it over to the Chief of Robuya. With the money raised, we not only completed the construction of the medical centre but we could also spend the money on the local schools and other communities. Thank you so much for your support! The people of Robuya appreciated your help so much. Merry Christmas !
