Story
The situation in Iraq remains hostile to Christians and most believe they have no option but to flee. Jordan offers a safe haven but only temporarily. Iraqi Christians are not recognised as refugees and therefore have no access to government support. St Pauls Church works alongside other churches of all denominations in the capital city, Amman, to help refugees find refuge in a third country. While in Jordan, the churches provide emergency help with food, accommodation, skills training and trauma counselling. Here is where the refugee respite camps come in. Hosted by indigenous Muslim Bedouin, small groups of young Iraqi refugees are escorted into the desert by indigenous Bedouin, where they receive psychological and spiritual support from their Jordanian hosts. Strath & Sleat Church of Scotland is involved through our twinning with St Pauls Church, an Arabic-speaking congregation of the Anglican Diocese of Jerusalem.
