CHARITIES
Papyrus:
Suicide is the biggest killer of young people – male and female – under 35 in the UK. In 2015, 1,659 young people took their own lives. That equates to over four per day. Every year many thousands more attempt or contemplate suicide, harm themselves or suffer alone, afraid to speak openly about how they are feeling.
We are the national charity for the prevention of young suicide.
We draw from the experience of many who have been touched personally by young suicide across the UK and speak on their behalf in our campaigns and in our endeavours to save young lives. Together we believe that with appropriate support and education, many young suicides can be prevented.
We deliver awareness and prevention training, provide confidential support and suicide intervention through HOPELineUK, campaign and influence national policy, and empower young people to lead suicide prevention activities in their own communities.
Common Wheel:
Established in 2001, Common Wheel is an award-winning mental health charity that aims to support people with mental illness to lead a meaningful and satisfying life; with positive relationships and a connection to their local community. We do this by providing meaningful activities via three projects for adults and elderly people with mental illness.
The bike project supports people in repairing and recycling old bikes into 'good as new' bikes for the clients to ride away and keep. The music project supports people in singing, playing, composing, and listening to music. Finally our new project for 2017 – Carnival Club – supports people in making carnival art for display at Glasgow's annual carnivals.
The objectives of these activities are to decrease isolation, improve mental wellbeing and learn new skills.
Any money raised will help to sustain these three individual projects and contribute towards our main expense, the professional musicians, bike engineers and artists who work directly with our clients. These outstanding, talented individuals provide support via their technical, musical and artistic expertise. The result for our clients is increased socialisation, increased skills, improved mental health and the opportunity to take part in fun, yet meaningful activities.
