'Late night at the Square Bar in Ayia Napa. Amongst the holiday makers and partying clubbers come two little dogs, rolling and chasing in front of the stage. By the time Kerry and I finished our set and put our instruments away they were already being doted upon with water and pats and friendly laps. One woman, who produced a carton of chicken for them, had followed the strays all the way up Nissi Avenue as they dodged through the cars quads bikes and mayhem of Saturday night Ayia Napa. All the way to this bar. And now to where Mia and Scarlett were siting. A young mother and her pup. The pup couldn't have been more than three months old, and the mother was young too, probably a year. The moment they sat with the girls they settled, resting between them. Mia and Scarlett stroked and talked to them and they relaxed into the seat.
I insisted the dogs were too clean and well behaved to be strays and that any moment now, their owner would turn up but no one did. We asked around the staff to see if anyone recognised them, but no one did. It was time to go. Kerry and Scarlett walked home. Mia refused to leave until I could tell her that the dogs would be looked after and safe. Again, questions went around the staff, this time to see if anyone wanted two dogs. Again, no one did. We stayed longer. I got another drink in. Mia kept petting. The dogs dozed off. Someone will turn up, I thought.
A woman appeared and with a furious brow and a thick eastern European accent insisted that she would take them. She sat down next to Mia. 'I am the only one who cares, no one else cares about animals' she said. She picked up the mother by the front paws and dragged her onto her lap. The mother whined. The pup immediately jumped from the seat and ran for it. Dropping the mother, the lady chased after the pup, searching around the bar, checking under tables, through customers' legs and between chairs. She came back to the table and bent down to Mia. 'This is Napa. If I don't take them they will die,' punching her fist into her hand and clenching her fingers around it. Mia tried to hold back tears. The mother was gone now too. Mia went off to look for her. Soon she came back to me, really crying this time. 'Help Daddy, she'd putting them in a box, in a box!'
Outside the bar the woman had placed a flimsy cardboard box on the wall and was wrestling the pup into it and trying to close the lid. I sat on the wall. 'So you'll take them home?' 'Yes. I am saving them.' 'Can you keep them in your home? Your apartment?' 'I will call my boss.' 'OK. Will you take them to the vet?' 'I will call my boss.' 'Where do you work? Where is your boss?' 'I live here. My boss has animals in Bulgaria. More than you can imagine.' 'Ah. Well, what about here, in Cyprus? What will you do with them? Will you take them to the vet?' 'You talk too much.' 'OK' We stayed like that, looking at each other. She seethed and squinted. The beats from the clubs rolled down the strip onto the square tumbling with the music from the bar. She still had her hand on top of the box. I waited. 'I will die before I see these animals turned into playthings. If children have them, they are just toys.' She grabbed the box from the wall by the sides, without putting a hand underneath to support it. I put my hand underneath and pulled it back onto the wall. 'That's not safe.' 'You are going to stop me?' 'I don't think they're safe with you.' 'Do you own them? No-one here does. I am the only one who will take them. Well? Do you own them?' 'No.' 'Then I can do what I want. I am taking them. I have more space in my heart for animals than for people. I have no space in my heart for humans. I will take them. Then I own them.' Mia was close by, not close enough to hear, but close enough for me to see how upset she was. The mother poked her head out of the box. I put my hand on her. She was trembling. 'No. I'm going to make sure they're OK.' I picked up the box and walked to the bar. She shouted after me, spitting out the words through the noisy Napa night - 'Your responsibility!!' Mia ran to me and asked 'Is she taking them?', and I said, 'No. We can go now. I'll make sure they are safe.''
